ABOUT SRUTI BARUA
Internationally acclaimed Odissi dancer Sruti Barua believes that dance is an art form where instructions are not just handed over from the Guru to the disciple, but also the grace and values passed over. Appreciated both as a performer and choreographer in the field of classical Odissi Dance in the country and abroad for the past three decades, Barua needs no introduction in this field.

Sruti Barua is also a Dance teacher at BGS International Public School Dwarka. ACCORDING TO HER...
“The mesmerizing method of Odissi dance is built on tandav (vigorous) or lasya (graceful, feminine) dance, and has two basic postures: ‘Tribanghi’, where the body holds the pose with three bends of the head, the torso and the knees, and ‘Chauka’, a square- like a stance that signifies Lord Jagannath. The flexibility of the upper torso is characteristic of Odissi, reminding us of the gentle waves of the sea that forever caress the magnificent Odisha beaches. The form has been developed over the years to include ‘Mangala Charanam’ (a traditional invocation item to Lord Jagannath, the presiding deity of Odisha), ‘Batu Nrutya’ (abstract dance with many sculptural poses). While the Odissi Dance style continues to evolve within the traditional format, group choreographies and dance dramas explore mythological themes as a new presentation format. This dance form is a celebration of human beauty using tremendous grace and body movements while happily offering a prayer to the supreme power- God”.
